About me

A little more info:

— Writing

I am an award-winning science writer and have crafted profiles, features, columns, science activities and scripts for video and podcast.

Some of my favorite reporting projects have included a dive into the benefits of exercise for back pain, why science fairs are unfair and how stress changes across the lifespan. I have written about the pandemic’s effects on animal behavior, the bonds between people and pets, and the ties between autism and OCD. I have also reported on the burden of Alzheimer’s Disease in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley for Public Health Watch—published by The Texas Tribune—and co-produced an accompanying Emmy-nominated video with Univision Digital.

My book the Kids’ Field Guide to Birds won the 2024 National Outdoor Book Award for Children.

— Editing

I am a contributing editor for Scientific American, where I edit the Mind Matters column, and The Transmitter, where I edit stories about autism research. Previously, I was features editor for SAPIENS where I developed and edited news and award-winning feature coverage of anthropology research. Prior to that I was an associate editor at Scientific American MIND.

— Leadership & Associations

From 2021 to 2023, I was president of the Austin Texas Science Communicators. I am a member of the National Association of Science Writers, The Association of Healthcare Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
